Organization is Key

Throughout my learning experience as a coder,  I also want to help other coders out with some tips and tricks! Although I am still only a beginner, I am constantly learning new ways to code and efficiently convey my design onto my website.

One of the biggest tips I can give to any coder, no matter the level, is the importance of staying organized. Seems simple enough, right? It’s so basic, however, it’s easy to look over when you’re worrying about and coding content much more complicated than organization. Staying organized keeps the coding process efficient. Whether it’s coding HTML, coding CSS, or for your documents in FileZilla, there are some easy tips to stay organized.

organized

HTML

A major tip when it comes to coding HTML is to keep your code spaced out. This spacial tactic makes it easier locate a problem by just looking over the coding, rather than having to navigate through messy code. This organized code also makes it easier to insert information and distinguish <section> <div> from one another, especially the more content, sections, and complicated the HTML is.Screen Shot 2018-10-30 at 12.48.15 PM.png

CSS

When coding for several media screens, it’s most efficient to code all the “theme” code (back-ground color, font-type, font-color, etc.) in the “main” section of the CSS code.By keeping all the same kind of code in the same section, the content is better organized. Categorizing your code and organizing it that way makes it easier to find design errors. Screen Shot 2018-10-30 at 12.06.33 PM.pngSince the “main” section is the theme that is true throughout all forms and all media screens, the individual sections should be any design specific to that form, and then just the measurements for each. Especially with measurements, coding is a lot of trial and error. Often, you have to adjust the fonts, and keep adjusting the sizing and margins until it’s just right. By having only measurements together in a section, it makes it easier when trying out different sizes. It stands out, and can be quickly reversed or changed.Screen Shot 2018-10-30 at 12.06.52 PM.pngScreen Shot 2018-10-30 at 12.07.09 PM.png

FileZilla

One of the most obvious, yet essential things to keep organized is your files. You must regularly delete old files and be regularly replacing them. Your files should be stored properly in folders, and all folders and files should have simple and logical names. Nothing is more frustrating than not saving something in the right folder, or not knowing what a file contains because of it’s ambiguous file name. By keeping your own computer and files organized, it makes the FileZilla transferring step straight forward. It’s a simple step, but it can cause lots of problems when organizing gets overlooked.I can’t tell you how many times I accidentally transferred an old file into my public_html, thus reverting my website to an out-dated version.

Although you may not be able to see the organization aspect of my website from a viewer’s perspective, the coding process is a lot more efficient on my end. Staying organized is essential in getting coding done, without the risk of complicating or accidentally changing a website. Although you may have heard this 100 times, it’s still good to emphasize the importance of staying organized and keeping code simple!

Oh, and Happy Halloween!

  1. Hey Cielle, I really related to this post because of my main struggles throughout the semester actually was maintaining an organized coding page in brackets. Like you said, it might not be evident to the viewer necessarily, but if something gets messed up on our page, this effects the viewer! It’s better to have an organized page so if this does happen, it is easier to go back and fix it efficiently. It can be really time consuming to go through a messy brackets page to try and detect the error. Organization helps with the overall turn out of the page more than we think!

  2. Hi Cielle,
I really admire how you point out the importance of organization within coding, because it is so true. Organization is vital when it comes to the coding progress, and after I organized my HTML and CSS I can say that it made my work less of a headache. Great post and keep up the work!

  3. Hi Cielle,

I agree with Eric and Erin on the importance of organization. I know we talk a lot about keeping our code organized but I never even thought about FireZilla but you are so right. After reading your post, I realized a lot of my success in this class came after I took the time to organize my FireZilla!

  4. Cielle,
I totally agree with this! Organization is something I’ve emphasized in both of my previous blog posts. I think it’s probably one of the most important aspects of successful coding. It’s good to see that others are maintaining this process… as it reminds me to do the same! I admire how organized your FileZilla folders are. Overtime mine have become somewhat disorganized, and I’m fearful to change/erase anything. Keep up the good work!

  5. Hi Cielle!

Looking back on this post now, I totally agree that organization is probably the most important aspect of coding. From typing the code itself to the files in FileZilla, it is essential to keep things clean and organized. Otherwise, it will be confusing and hard to keep track of things!
